Unleashing the power of NFV: Artiza Networks’ new product aims to accelerate packet processing across virtual machines

1 November 2016

Press Release

  •  PowerNFV, a hardware accelerator that optimizes management of high-volume traffic over virtual machines, was demoed at Interop Tokyo 2016.
  •  PowerNFV utilizes Artiza Networks’ expertise in FPGA development to take advantage of faster, more efficient PCI Express cards (Gen3 x 8 lanes) that are equipped with 4 ports of 10GbE SFP and use Altera’s latest FPGA, Arria10.

TOKYO – Artiza Networks demonstrated the potential of its PowerNFV hardware accelerator at Interop Tokyo 2016. With PowerNFV, which is still in the development stage, Artiza aims to eliminate some of the barriers to implementing Network Function Virtualization in IP networks. Network traffic is expected to continue to increase and even accelerate in the future, and Artiza Networks is proactively developing products to support the essential aim of NFV: reducing CAPEX and OPEX with infrastructure that is both flexible and reliable.

Artiza Networks is a well-known vendor in the telecom testing industry. Their in-depth knowledge of the troubles faced when implementing new LTE network infrastructure and their expertise in FPGA development give them an ideal platform for expanding into products that aim to advance the performance of infrastructure for new and next generation networks.

Across industries, the benefits of moving network functions onto generic hardware are clear. However, the clock rates of CPUs in IA (Intel ® Architecture) servers have nearly reached their limits. This is a major problem for servers that handle processing for VMs used for NFV, because the resource demands for data plane processing will only continue to increase. In particular, flow tables necessary for IP packet forwarding tend to cause significant bottlenecks. When this occurs, the host CPU focuses resources on the data plane and neglects control plane processing, which can lead to network malfunctions.

PowerNFV will resolve troubles with bottlenecking, monitor VM performance across vendors, simplify troubleshooting, and preserve forensic data for identifying and isolating problems when serious issues occur. Although it is possible to use the host CPU’s resources or add more servers for these functions, PowerNFV is a more efficient and forward-looking solution to these challenges. Combined with detailed graphical displays of fluctuations in resource usage and a streamlined dashboard screen, PowerNFV will maximize the effectiveness of implementing NFV in any IP network.
